Hi Readers!

Hey there friends, Its Sha here to talk about my User Generated Content.

Before I jump into the topic I have something very interesting for you guys. I bet you will be awed by the wonderful video that my teammates and I have created. More than the time, money, and hard work put into this content, we have put in hell lot of fun.

This video is a parody of the “Do you have any special talents?” video. The issues that we have brought into view are the hoarding problems in Singapore, the Japanese Invasion, and at last the ultimate swag of our very own video. I am really eager to see the other classmates videos. It was a very fun experience, getting our hands on editing after so many months was a tough game but we managed to get things done in time.

User Generated Content is basically content that is being created by the audience for the audience. Previously, any given content like drama, news, cartoon, reality show, etc were created by a groups of people called the media personalities, actors, etc. The ordinary people were just viewers of the content. But, in the past decade, common person have gained easy access to it. This has made viewers think more and tempted them to become creators themselves.

We have all passed the days of admiring big stars, and come to the stage of admiring self. People started sharing views, showing talents, educating people, and entertaining online through multiple platforms and social media.

Before 15 years there was no such job as “Instagrammers”, “Social media activist”, “Fashion bloggers”, etc. These are jobs that have evolved from the development of media over the years. We all know about Lilly Singh don’t we!

She is one of the people who made a remarkable identity of themselves through Web 2.0. She worked really hard and produced good content while being a YouTube star. She attracted millions of hearts through her “Trip to Unicorn Island” world tour. And now, she is a Late Night Show host in an American Show. Without Web 2.0, talents like her would have had less likely the opportunity to come out and gain popularity in the world.

All these discussions make me wonder if the modern day media (User Generated Content) has changed the viewers opinion on the mainstream traditional TV. Well nothing is constant right! So isn’t this.

Mainstream television was one of the fastest and most effective ways to obtain information about happenings around the world. But, after media reached the hands of the users, information is being passed and spread like wildfire. It reaches the viewers ears even before it reaches the traditional TV nowadays.

The clever media TV industry has now made news reporting very efficient by creating platforms for viewers to upload any information they know. This will hence make it easier for the content to reach the TV and then be broadcasted. Even then, how many people today bother to sit in front of the TV to watch the news telecast?

Every single thing needed is available on the phone. All the way from instant news update to cashless payment methods in shops. Traditional TV has become the last place to receive an update on a news. And in today’s world, most people cannot afford to set aside hours to learn about things that are not important to them in real time. It is just passed to them as news bits on the go.

Apart from that, in order to keep mainstream TV in business, some excellent TV shows have restricted shows to only the channel viewers, instead of making it available on any online platform. This makes many people watch TV just for the sake of that particular show. A physical TV is now being used for various other purposes like Netflix, casting from a device, live streaming videos, etc. So, TV are still being used but for multiple purposes other than just cable shows.

This whole blog post writing has made me realize how the hand phones have taken the lives of many individuals. The convenience of mobile phones has now turned into addiction. That is all I have for my opinion on Mainstream media after the Web 2.0. Thank you all readers for reading this blog. Hope to see you guys soon again!

  1. Hey Akshaya! Great work you and your team did for your parody video! I loved the acting and the background music! Makes it really entertaining it mocks the events well! User generated content has indeed taken over by storm and has been an essential to other daily lives. It has created a lot more job opportunities for ANYONE to showcase their skills and talent and be famous overnight! I used to watch Lily Singh’s a lot because I that she takes pride in making her content entertaining and funny, she deserves all the spotlight! I LOVED THE EXAMPLE!! (TOTALLY BIASED!)

User generated has indeed made our lives easier, and the problem with mobile phones addiction worries me and the future generation. I guess we are indeed transitioning into a digital world! ☹

  2. Hey shaaaa!!

I’m so sad but a little happy that this will be our last blog post and this will be my last comment for you 😦

Marvelous acting, you guys are natural actors, aren’t you? I didn’t know what to expect until the bottle flipping starts & I cracked up the moment I managed to catch the mockery intended especially …. the panic buying culture. The last bit of the video was top notch, HOLLYWOOD quality HAHAHAHAHA (genuine opinion). In the present day, user-generated content seems to be the leading source of entertainment with viral platforms like Tiktok which is so easy to access. Easy access = convenient entertainment, am I right? Since we are on that, content creators can also be a full-fledged Tiktok-er!

I’m mindblown …. in this century it seems easy to make money off the internet with the existence of web 2.0. I agree with you that these days, traditional TV would be the last place for us to receive news as our news as there are such things as online news now! Much more convenient & there is no need to wait for 8pm to receive an update of the world’s progress.

Even if this is the last blog post, it won’t be the last time to see you though! 🙂

    Take care Sha!

  3. Hi Sha! Very smart of your team to make such a simple clip into a 3 min long video! It was funny and I like how you guys made it so dramatic! Good effort and very good acting!
I agree with you that not many people will sit in front of the TV to watch the news telecast. It is quite sad because watching TV with our family is actually a good way to bond with them by discussing common topics, etc. Too bad people rarely do that anymore.
User Generated Content indeed brings us closer to the digital world. It is important for us to use it wisely.

  4. Hi Sha! Your group’s video is sooo interesting! I love it so much HAHAHA. (Is it hard for you guys to keep a straight face when filming?XD)
I myself didn’t even turn on the TV since I have got my own smart phone. I can just watch everything online that I don’t need TV anymore. But “arguing” with my parents for which channel to watch and sitting in front of the TV right before the show begins are good memories of my childhood.
UGC definitely provided more job opportunities for people. People can earn money by filming and editing videos at home and upload them to Youtube. Some people may also upload their singing or dancing videos online that the entertainment corporation would discover them and they will have the chances to be idols. It makes everyone’s life easier.

  5. Hello Sha!! Loved your blog post this week and I must say I love your groups video!! Money well spent haha. I laughed so much that my mother had to checked on me if I was still sane or not haha. I definitely agree with you that the media now has created more jobs for us, and to me that is amazing because we are able to do things that we like and still earn from it!

Have to be honest, I have not touched the TV remote (other than shifting it around) from the day I started watching videos on my phone!

  6. Hi Sha! Loved the points you brought up in your post. I completely agree with what you said about ‘every single thing needed is on our phones’ which is absolutely true. To me, it’s not a very good thing actually. In my opinion, mainstream media such as our televisions are super important. Especially right now! With so much content coming from everyone, everywhere, we’re unnecessarily causing panic in our society. That’s why I enjoy the idea that we can always come back to our traditional news stations and be pampered with facts. It really makes you feel a lot better. (:

    1. Hey Sha, very detailed and informative post as usual. I was quite into the part where you talked about Lily Singh. She was once a humble content creator on YouTube, but she rose to celebrity level and even had her own comedy show on traditional TV. Quite the interesting story, but at the same time it was not very well received. Her comedy segments were not very funny or relatable, and she ignores criticism for the most part, brushing them off and calling them haters.
We can see a big shift in openness and creativity when she did the transition. It seems as though she was forced into following a format she did not like, instead of her own content that she was successful for.

  7. Hi Sha! Really love the video that your team has produced! I really liked how you used Lily Singh as an example that has benefitted from Web 2.0. I used to watch her content on YouTube all the time as most of her content are relatable and humorous.

It is true that our phones have become really useful to us users as the years past. When everything we need is available through our phones, we have become impatient as to how we set our time. To me, if my apps are starting to lag, I get frustrated as I want to watch my shows on the go. I also seldom watch shows on television as they tend to show repeated movies from years back and I tend to get bored after watching it for a couple of minutes.

See you next week till we have online classes, cheers!
